Canadian and Indian Navy participate in Combined Maritime Forces’ Multinational Exercise

Seychelles:  Canada and India along with Naval forces from several countries participated in a two-week naval exercise, in Seychelles, signalling growing global interest in the western Indian Ocean organized by Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), the world’s largest multinational naval partnership.

Other participating countries included Australia, Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States to enhance operational readiness as well as to strengthen regional collaboration

Sunayna, Indian Naval Ship (INS) on Saturday entered Port Victoria in the capital city of the archipelago of 115 islands which lies northeast of Madagascar to participate in CMF’s annual training exercise ‘Operation Southern Readiness’.

“This not only reinforces Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region but also marks the maiden participation of an Indian Navy ship in CMF exercise,” a statement from the Indian Defence Ministry said Monday.

The two-week mission in partnership with the Seychelles People’s Defence Force, European Union Naval Force, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and India is being led by CMF.

34 member nations whose forces operate in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Northern Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean comprise Seychelles CMF.

CMF nations said that they are committed unitedly in upholding international rules-based order to protect the free flow of commerce in making ensuring regional maritime security as well as detering illicit activity by non-state actors.
