IBNS-CMEDIA: A UK couple were left stunned after discovering what appeared to be a hidden stash of cash concealed inside an old paint tin while exploring a secret room in the cellar of their historic home, according to media reports.
The money, found inside the paint can buried beneath a pile of coal, totalled more than £1,000 in £5 notes dating back to the 1970s, Newsweek reported.
Luisa, 34, and her husband, Dan, live in a house in Sheffield, England, that dates back to 1900. Ever since moving into the property, Luisa had been curious about a mysterious bricked-up room hidden beneath the house, often joking that they might one day uncover a treasure.
During the search, Dan first discovered “tons of coal” inside the concealed cellar. After bagging it up, he noticed an unusual paint tin hidden underneath.
“He put it to one side for months, and we were nervous about opening it because it smelled like ammonia,” Luisa told Newsweek.
After finally working up the courage to open the container, the couple recorded the moment on video.
To their amazement, the paint tin was filled with old £5 banknotes, amounting to more than £1,000, with the currency dating back to the 1970s.
“None of us were expecting money inside. It was such a fantastic memory for the kids—they will remember it forever,” Luisa told Newsweek.
She added that the family carefully dried out the damp banknotes and, before taking them to the bank, even used the unexpected windfall to play a game of Monopoly, turning the remarkable discovery into a memorable family moment.
