A tentative deal has been struck just ahead of a deadline that would have seen some 2,400 Via Rail workers walk off the job was reportedly announced today by the officials with Via Rail and Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100.

The deal, which still has to be ratified by the union will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2022, and in effect through Dec. 31, 2024, a statement from Via Rail said.

“These tentative agreements are subject to a ratification vote by VIA Rail’s Unifor members. Once ratified, the collective agreements will be retroactive to January 1, 2022 and in effect through December 31, 2024. Please note that details of the agreements will only be released following ratification by members,” said the statement

According to the statement details of the new contract would be released once it has been ratified by members.

“VIA Rail is pleased to have negotiated these agreements…We sympathize with the passengers and communities…As we look forward to ratification, these tentative agreements allow our teams to get back to doing what we do best: serving Canadians throughout the country,” said Martin R Landry, President and Chief Executive Officer in the press release.

With the continued progress, several deadlines have been pushed back by the union that would have derailed the company’s operations coast to coast due to the initiation of job action.
