The Saskatchewan government’s increased revenues have turned its initial forecast in March of a big deficit of about $463 million into a $1-billion budget surplus.

In a first-quarter financial update provided Tuesday morning, the government of Saskatchewan said there has been a major turnaround due to higher resource revenues reflecting higher commodity prices for things like potash and oil.

Finance Minister Donna Harpauer reported saying the improvement would enable the province to balance the budget, pay down debt and roll out an “affordability” plan.

As part of that plan, all Saskatchewan 18 years of age or older residents who have filed a tax return will receive a $500 cheque in the fall.
