Kolkata/IBNS-CMEDIA: Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming Bengali film Emperor Vs Sarat Chandra brings the literary legacy of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and the nationalist fervour of his controversial novel Pather Dabi to the big screen, revisiting a chapter of Bengal’s literary and political history.

The film’s trailer was unveiled at Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Kuthi in Deulti, Howrah, where the celebrated Bengali author spent the final years of his life. The choice of venue highlighted the connection between the writer’s legacy and a cinematic narrative rooted in the political tensions of colonial India.

Based on Pather Dabi, the film explores a period when revolutionary nationalism, colonial authority and questions of independence shaped public discourse. The novel, known for its revolutionary themes, remains one of Sarat Chandra’s most politically significant works.

Bringing a literary legacy to the screen

Director Srijit Mukherji reflected on the significance of unveiling the trailer at the author’s residence, suggesting that the event would remain a part of the estate’s history long after the promotional spectacle had faded.

“Standing today, setting up a pandal with LEDs and names like Abir Chatterjee and Tota Roy Chowdhury in Srijit Mukherjee’s Sharodiya film might be relevant to us, but just 50 years from now, the only thing that would be left of this is the trailer launch for the film, which brought Sarat Chandra back to life, happened outside the very estate he wrote his novels in,” Mukherji said.

The film features Abir Chatterjee as Sabyasachi Mallick, a character associated with the novel’s revolutionary spirit. Speaking about the role, Chatterjee connected the character’s ideals with the sacrifices made by freedom fighters during India’s struggle for independence.

“The people whom we call superheroes, Sabyasachi, might really be one,” Chatterjee said, reflecting on the character’s nationalist fervour.

The actor added that being part of a film paying tribute to Sarat Chandra at the writer’s own estate made the experience particularly meaningful.

Tagore’s place in the narrative

The film also features Sanjoy Nag as Rabindranath Tagore, whose presence adds another literary dimension to the story.

Nag said his preparation for the role differed from his earlier portrayal of Tagore in Rituparno Ghosh’s Jeevan Smriti. While that project required more extensive preparation, Emperor VS Sarat Chandra focuses on the period surrounding the publication of Pather Dabi, the controversies surrounding the novel and its wider historical context.

Although Tagore has a limited role in the film, Nag described the character as significant to the narrative.

Debutant Divyani Mondal, who plays Bharati, said her character is gentle and soft-spoken but willing to stand up for herself and her country when necessary.

A Durga Puja release

Featuring Abir Chatterjee, Tota Roy Chowdhury and other cast members, Emperor VS Sarat Chandra is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 15, coinciding with Durga Panchami.

The film marks another collaboration between Mukherji and Bengali cinema audiences during the festive season. The director is also taking on the roles of lyricist and composer for the project.
