Edmonton/CMEDIA: Calls for expanded coverage for continuous glucose monitors has been made by the Alberta government to enable people with diabetes to track blood sugar levels in real time.

Alberta advotates hope expand the coverage of Continuous glucose monitoring technology, which since 2022 covers children under the age of 18 under government health benefit plans, to adults.

Using a sensor inserted under the skin that constantly measures blood glucose levels, the monitors’s information is transmitted to another device like a cellphone or an insulin pump.

As Phase 2 of the province’s three-part plan, the continuous glucose monitors (CMG) costing round $3,000 to $5,000 a year can provide enhanced care and better access to technology for Albertans with diabetes.

Current diabetes care is being reviewed by the Alberta’s Diabetes Working Group, which will present recommendations to the province’s health minister in the fall, Alberta’s spokesperson Scott Johnston was reported saying in an email statement and added that this will play a major role in shaping a long-term strategy for diabetes care in the province.
