Calgary/CMEDIA: The employees of the WestJet and the public are being alerted about a “cybersecurity incident” involving the Calgary-based airline’s internal systems and app.
In a news release on Friday, the airline said ‘WestJet is aware of a cybersecurity incident involving internal systems and the WestJet app…We have activated specialized internal teams in cooperation with law enforcement and Transport Canada to investigate the matter and limit impacts.’
The release added that the airline is “expediting efforts” to keep its operations safe and “safeguard sensitive data and personal information,” and apologizes for any disruption to access to its services.
WestJet is urging caution in sharing data
WestJet added, ‘It is too early to speculate on details, though we are committed to sharing what we know as information becomes available. WestJet advises that guests and employees exercise additional caution at this time, especially when sharing personal information.’
On Saturday morning, WestJet gave an update, saying that its ‘operation is running safely and remains unaffected…We apologize to our guests and employees for any interruptions they may be experiencing as a result.’
Committed to providing regular updates to maintain transparency, WestJet said it will update this page every 12 hours, or sooner if required, as any additional information becomes available.
Early Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson emailed back saying that the cybersecurity incident “is affecting access to some services and software systems.”
