CMEDIA: According to the The Peel Regional Police reported Update on Organized Auto Theft, and has recovered — since the beginning of the 2025 — almost half of the vehicles stolen in the region with a total value of $26 million.
In addition, 257 individuals have been charged with 479 auto thefts.
“We have made significant steps in addressing the ongoing threat of organized auto theft in our communities…one of the largest of its kind in Canada…While there is still more work to be done, we remain committed the fight against auto theft,” Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Peel Regional Police reported saying.
With rates of organized auto theft increasing in 2022, Peel Regional Police and the Peel Police Service Board were among the first to react by holding the first ever auto theft summit at the start of 2023.
This summit provided a platform bringing together law enforcement, government officials and industry partners to develop and implement recommendations to help combat organized auto theft and raise awareness.
Significant investments of double the size, one of the largest in the country, were also made by the Peel Regional Police in its Commercial Auto Crime Bureau.
These efforts helped in tackling the issue with follow results:
More than $380 million in recoveries since January 2023 which equates to over 7400 vehicles recovered
More than 1100 auto theft-related charges laid against 543 individuals since January 2023
16 per cent decrease in auto thefts in 2024 compared to 2023
45 per cent reduction in auto thefts compared to the same period last year, a $60 million reduction
