Halifax/CMEDIS: A North Atlantic right whale has been spotted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, north of Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Que for the first time this year, by surveillance aircraft, reported the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Tuesday.

Since then a 15-day fishing closure is in effect in specific fishing grids in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

With approximately 336 North Atlantic right whales in existence, many right whales spend their summers feeding in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Warlier this year fifteen calves were observed in waters off the United States.
