RCMP arrest a Montreal suspct on terrorism charger after tip from FBI

Acteing on information from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). the RCMP arrested a Montreal man was arrested Thursday on terrorism allegations, media reports said.

The RCMP arrested 18-year-old Mohamed Amine Assal from Montreal’s St-Laurent borough, said officers.

They said that their operation involved disrupting Assal’s “suspicious activities” in order to get him to sign a terrorism peace bond that could include several conditions.

 Cpl. Tasha Adams was quoting Thursday that after receiving intelligence from the FBI and conducting a short investigation of the RCMP integrated national security enforcement team, the RCMP fet that Mr. Assal may commit a terrorism offence.

   “At this time, no charges are laid. We are currently in the process of acquiring further evidence with regards to this investigation. A search warrant is underway at the residence of the individual.”

Scheduled to appear in court via video conference this afternoon, Assal would be undertaking to keep the peace, Adams said.

A peace bond application related to terrorism, according to the Criminal Code is heard by a provincial court judge.

After seeing the evidence, if the judge believes there are reasonable grounds they may order a defendant to sign a bond for 12 months.

The alleged offence being the subject of an ongoing investigation, was not eleborated by the RCMP.

The police force is committed to countering religiously motivated violent extremism. said an RCMP news release.
