IBNS-CMEDIA: Debashish Das is a mindfulness-based emotional wellness practitioner with a distinctive perspective shaped by his multifaceted background. Born in Shillong, Debashish’s professional journey has traversed the fields of medicine and information technology, equipping him with deep insights into the complexities of the human mind. These experiences inspired him to co-found the Sound N Mind Foundation with Sourish Choudhury, where he plays a pivotal role in advancing its mission. He is currently fully devoted to the foundation’s Elderly Care Emotional Companionship Program, where he combines his expertise and compassion to offer meaningful emotional support to senior citizens. Communication expert Subhojit Roy caught up with him for a quick chat. Excerpts:

What is emotional companionship, and its role in helping the elderly?

Emotional companionship involves emotional support through empathy, that is to say, to bridge a connection, to address languor and desolation. In the context of elderly care, it aims to make older adults feel valued, connected, and supported. Emotional support is crucial for the elderly because it directly influences their feelings. By offering a listening ear, validating their experiences, and engaging them in meaningful interactions, companionship fosters self-esteem, reduces feelings of depression and anxiety, and enhances the quality of life.

Can you describe your role as an emotional companion for elderly individuals?

My role as an emotional companion for elderly individuals is all about bringing a burst of joy and fostering in them the meaning of ageing gracefully. This may include spending emotionally-based recreational activities with them. These activities may range from a game of mindful chess to discussing and playing music of a specific genre. It is just a way to be a ray of sunshine to brighten their day.

What inspired you to focus on providing emotional companionship to the elderly?

As a child, I had seen my father, first-hand, on how brilliantly he made situations of grey turn into green, and this was more so with the elderly denizens living around us. Perhaps, that is the spark which has ignited my vibrations and propelled me to add value, connection and support, especially for the senior denizens.

What are the primary emotional needs of the elderly that you address in your work?

The primary needs include combating emotional anxiety. The factor of loneliness, too, may or may not have a profound effect, but providing a listening ear and making them aware of their emotions makes a connection, which offers a sense of belongingness to them. Healing begins this way.

How do you tailor your approach to meet the unique needs of each elderly person you work with?

I prioritise getting to know each individual on a personal level. I learn about their family history, interests, preferences, and any specific challenges they may be facing. This allows me to adapt my communication style and activities to create a comfortable and meaningful connection.

What kinds of activities or interactions do you find are most beneficial in providing emotional support?

Meaningful conversations are the key where we need to listen to their stories, share experiences, and discuss their thoughts and feelings. Activities they enjoy, like reminiscing, listening to music, sauntering into a discussion, playing games of interest, or simply being present with them, can also be very beneficial.

How do you handle situations where an elderly person is experiencing emotions, such as sadness, grief, or anxiety?

I approach these situations with empathy, patience, and deep understanding, then create a safe space for them to express their feelings without judgment. I listen attentively, validate their emotions, and offer reassurance and support. I also know when to suggest professional help and can facilitate that if needed.

What role does active listening play in your companionship approach?

Active listening is a fundamental approach. It involves fully focusing on what the person is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. It’s about showing genuine interest, asking clarifying questions, and reflecting their feelings. This helps them feel heard, understood, and valued.

How do you help the elderly maintain a sense of purpose and independence?

I encourage them to engage in activities that give them joy and a sense of accomplishment. I support their autonomy by respecting their choices and abilities, and by helping them stay connected to their beliefs and interests.

What are some of the challenges you face in your work, and how do you overcome them?

Challenges can include dealing with age-related health issues, communication difficulties, and an air of silent resistance to accepting help. I try to overcome these by being patient, adaptable, and resourceful. I collaborate with families, learning about their tendencies, habits and choices, and in accordance, I ground them to be rooted in present moment awareness.

What is the most rewarding aspect of providing emotional companionship to the elderly?

The most rewarding aspect is seeing the slow but steady positive impact. Witnessing their smiles, hearing their stories, and being a part of their journey where they allow themselves towards emotional wellness, is incredibly fulfilling.

Can you share a meaningful moment or story that shows the impact of your work?

One gentleman hadn’t spoken much since his wife passed. He was completely down on the emotional plane. After many sessions with him and mapping his life over numerous games of chess, he has come to terms with the setback and can negate negative thoughts and emotions. I must add here that the use of chess as a tool for self-reflection and emotional processing is an interesting and potentially effective approach. While not a traditional therapy method, the strategic thinking and pattern recognition involved in chess could offer insights into life’s challenges.
