IBNS-CMEDIA: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday successfully launched NVS-03, India’s next-generation navigation satellite, strengthening the country’s indigenous navigation capabilities and marking another significant milestone in its space programme.
When most of the countrymen were fast asleep, scientists created history when the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), carrying the satellite, lifted off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR).
NVS-03 is the third satellite in the next-generation navigation satellite system, envisaged to ensure continuity of navigation services under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
The satellite carries an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured atomic clocks. It also features the L1 signal in addition to the existing L5 and S signals, providing coverage across India’s landmass and a region extending 1,500 km beyond the country’s geopolitical boundary.
The countdown for the mission officially commenced at 11.51 pm on Thursday.
NVS-03 is a crucial addition to the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), India’s indigenous regional satellite navigation system and an alternative to the US-operated GPS.
What Is the NVS-03 Satellite?
According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is India’s independent regional navigation satellite system designed to provide accurate Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services to users across the country and the region extending approximately 1,500 km beyond the Indian landmass.
NVS-03 is the third satellite in the next-generation navigation satellite series, developed to ensure continuity of navigation services provided by the existing IRNSS constellation.
The satellite is equipped with an indigenous atomic clock, along with procured atomic clocks. It also incorporates the L1 frequency signal in addition to the existing L5 and S signals, enhancing NavIC’s capabilities and coverage.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO scientists and engineers on the successful launch.
In a post on X, Modi wrote: “Congratulations to our scientists and engineers at ISRO on the successful launch of GSLV-F18 carrying NVS-03.”
He further said: “This mission marks an important step in strengthening NavIC, our indigenous satellite navigation system. Equipped with enhanced capabilities, NVS-03 will further our pursuit of self-reliance in critical technologies and support navigation services that benefit our people.”
“The dedication and ingenuity of our space scientists continue to make our nation proud,” the Prime Minister added.
