IBNS-CMEDIA: A career counsellor has sparked a debate on social media after claiming that earning more than Rs 2 lakh a month often becomes a trap rather than a pathway to greater freedom in India.
Mohit Talreja, in a video shared on Instagram, argued that while a high salary provides financial comfort, chasing ever-higher pay can lead to an endless cycle of competition and burnout.
His remarks have since gone viral, prompting discussions on inflation, work-life balance and the meaning of financial freedom.
“High salary remains a trap in India,” Talreja said in the video.
According to him, a person can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in India once their monthly salary reaches around Rs 2 lakh.
“A person can live a decent lifestyle in India once his salary reaches the Rs 2 lakh per month mark,” he said.
However, he argued that continuing to chase higher salaries often pushes professionals into what he described as an “infinite rat race.”
“You’re competing with people at the top who are ‘all-in’—meaning they are willing to sacrifice everything to advance their careers,” Talreja said.
He added that not everyone is willing—or able—to make those sacrifices, making the pursuit of ever-higher salaries unsustainable for many.
Instead, Talreja advised people to prioritise their health, relationships and overall quality of life rather than getting caught in the pursuit of high-paying careers.
He also encouraged professionals to develop what he called “non-employable” skills—skills that remain valuable over the next 10 to 15 years and are not solely dependent on traditional employment.
