Health Canada for fourth time recalls mushrooms over life-threatening bacteria

Health Canada has reportedly recalled the same variety of mushroom in Canada for a shocking fourth time in just a few months owing to potential contamination with a life-threatening bacteria.

Citing possible Listeria monocytogenes, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, four different brands of Enoki mushrooms, popular for their use in all sorts of trendy dishes, have been removed from shelves across the country since last fall , ,

The affected product this week is a 200g pack of the fungi from K-Fresh, which has been sold in Ontario, B.C., Quebec, and “possibly other provinces and territories.”

 Posted on March 14, the recall has advised residents not to distribute, sell, use, serve or eat the food, and either dispose of any K-fresh enokis, or return them to where they were purchased.

It has been also warned by the federal government that even though consumables with Listeria may not look or smell off, these can still make you very sick, and infection in sme cases can even result in death.

Symptoms of the food poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and nausea to fever, muscle aches and headache.

Neck stiffness, loss of balance, confusion and worse can also be experienced by more serious cases with symptoms appearing up to 70 days after initial exposure.

Although thankfully, there haven’t been any illnesses reported from the K-fresh mushrooms as of yet, other products recalled for Listeria, such as the President’s Choice Chopped Mexican-Style Street Corn Salad Kit with the cheese used in the product linked to a much larger recall in the US in recent months have led to 23 hospitalizations, two deaths, 26 cases and 23 hospitalizations in almost a dozen states are linked to the outbreak according to the FDA.
