Los Angeles/IBNS-CMEDIA: ‘Oppenheimer’ actor David Krumholtz has announced an “indefinite break” from acting, expressing his frustration with the Hollywood industry after more than three decades of work.
In a now-deleted Threads post, Krumholtz said he had been “frustrated, fed up, fried” after spending more than 30 years in Hollywood.
He said he had been afraid to step away because of the possibility of going broke, but felt a huge sense of relief after sending what he described as the “definitive email” putting his acting career on hold.
Why is Krumholtz stepping away?
Krumholtz’s concerns centred on several changes he believes have affected Hollywood and performers.
He said character actors are being undervalued and underpaid despite years of experience.
He criticised what he described as the corporatisation of Hollywood and the decline of the relationship between studios and performers.
He expressed frustration over being expected to build a social media presence and chase likes and followers to secure acting opportunities.
He argued that artists should receive fair compensation when their work generates profits.
He said he was no longer interested in simply “begging” for acting opportunities.
‘Not quitting acting completely’
Despite announcing an indefinite break, Krumholtz clarified that he is not quitting acting altogether.
He said he remains open to returning if the right opportunity comes along and wants to work on projects that create an impact rather than simply focusing on earning money.
From Broadway to Hollywood
Krumholtz, currently 48, began acting professionally as a teenager and made his Broadway debut in Conversations with My Father in 1992.
He became widely recognised after playing Bernard, the head elf, in the 1994 Christmas comedy The Santa Clause. He reprised the role in The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and later in the Disney+ series The Santa Clauses (2022).
