Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as Pakistan’s 14th president

IBNS-CMEDIA: Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari was elected as Pakistan’s 14 president on Saturday, days after Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister of the financially -hit nation.

This is going to be Zardari’s second term as the President.

Zardari received majority votes of the electoral college, comprising the parliament and provincial assemblies, paving way for him to assume the office of President of Pakistan, reported ARY News.

According to reports, the PPP co-Chairman received 411 votes while the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) backed candidate Mehmood Khan Achakzai — the home of PTI independents — bagged only 181 seats.

Asif Ali Zardari was backed by PPP and the PML-N.

An electoral college comprising members of the Senate, National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies elected the President.

Who is Asif Ali Zardari?

Asif Ali Zardari is the husband of  slain Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

She was assassinated in 2007.

He will replace   Dr Arif Alvi whose five-year term ended last year.

Alvi continued since the new electoral college was not formed.

Zardari had earlier served as the country’s President from 2008 to 2013.

Congratulating Zardari, Sharif was quoted as saying by Geo News: “Zardari’s election as president is the continuity of democratic values”

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari wishes new President

Bilawal wished his father Asia Ali Zardari and wrote on X: “Congratulations President elect Zardari @AAliZardari.”
