Ottawa/CMEDIA: After experiencing one of the fastest recoveries from the pandemic, the Government of Canada plans to welcome 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022, a news release said.
Newcomers enrich our communities by contributing to Canada’s economy by working, creating jobs, and supporting local businesses.
Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced today that Canada has reached that target, surpassing our previous record from 2021 representing the largest number of people ever welcomed in a year, in Canadian history.
“Today marks an important milestone for Canada, setting a new record for newcomers welcomed in a single year….I am excited to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year in 2023 as we continue to welcome newcomers,” Fraser said in the news release
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), with its higher bar processing has contributed to this incredible achievement by processing 5.2 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship in 2022, double the number of applications processed in 2021
Before this new record in 2021, the last time Canada had welcomed such a large number of newcomers was in 1913.
With historic numbers of newcomers, IRCC has added resources, embraced new technology, streamlined processing, and brought more processes online to further improve Canada’s immigration system. With Canada focusing on addressing the acute labor market shortages we are facing today, Canada’s robust immigration system would lead to building a strong economy in the future.
