CMEDIA: US President Joe Biden declared June as Pride Month by delivering remarks in a day of events intended to mark the contributions of LGBTQ Americans. He also signed H.R. 49, which designates the site of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting as the “National Pulse Memorial.”

The United States celebrates Pride Month every June commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, when a gay bar in New York City was raided by police and patrons of gay bar stood up against discrimination, abuse, and mistreatment.

The president took a moment, ahead of his remarks to honor the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, adding that no other president will ever have to sign a memorial bill like that one.

Biden’s remarks followed the announced by the Department of Education  earlier this month that transgender students are now protected under Title IX.

Pride is a reminder of the spirit of democratic protest and the principle of equality of all persons with respect for every individual’s full humanity.

Any educational setting that receives federal aid protects people from discrimination based on sex, and now, gender identity and sexual orientation by the federal civil rights law, passed in 1972,

Five decades after Stonewall, the people of the United States have come to realize that they can make their nation stronger by inclusion of and respect for LGBTQI+ persons.

The impact of LGBTQI+ persons and organizations on some of the cornerstones of the nation’s democracy had been recognized by the people of the United States, including in pursuing truth through a free media and exercising the right to peacefully assemble.

Working to promote and protect the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons around the world, the U.S. Department of State proudly and strongly opposes the “otherization” of LGBTQI+ persons to justify authoritarian power grabs and attacks on institutions of democracy globally.
