IBNS-CMEDIA: US President Donald Trump on Saturday wrote on his social media handle that India and Pakistan have agreed to a ‘full and immediate ceasefire’.
Trump said the two warring countries reached the agreement after a ‘long night of talks mediated by the United States’.
He wrote on Truth Social: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The Indian government has not commented on the issue so far.
Marco Rubio Writes On X
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also shared the development and wrote on X: “Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.”
Rubio further said: “I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. “
Pakistan Foreign Minister Confirms
Pakistani Foreign Minister confirmed the development and wrote on X: ” Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
Rubio-Jaishankar Telephonic Conversation
Rubio on Saturday interacted with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar over the telephone when he urged the Indian leader to identify methods to de-escalate the ongoing tension with neighbouring Pakistan.
This is the most intense conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999.
Speaking on the interaction with Rubio, S Jaishankar wrote on X: “Had a conversation with US @SecRubio this morning.”
He further said: “India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so.”
Sharing details about the telephonic conversation, US Department of State said: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Secretary Rubio emphasized that both sides need to identify methods to de-escalate and re-establish direct communication to avoid miscalculation.”
Rubio proposed US support in facilitating productive discussions to avert future disputes.
Hours after a ceasefire deal supposedly brokered by United States, Pakistan on Saturday violated the agreement along the LoC at multiple locations. Explosions were heard in Srinagar, said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” he posted on X.
“What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!,” Abdullah posted.
Reports said the Border Security Force (BSF) has been asked to retaliate the violations along the LoC.
Junior home minister Harsh Sanghavi on an X post said several drones were spotted in the Kutch district of Gujarat. “A complete blackout will be implemented now,” he posted, asking people to stay safe.
Earlier today, India and Pakistan agreed to stop military actions on land, air and sea. The government confirmed a ceasefire on Saturday, corroborating US President Donald Trump’s claim of ceasefire. In a press brief, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the military action had been called off from 17:00 hours.
“DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) of Pakistan called up DGMO (of India) at 3.35 pm. They agreed that both sides will stop all firing and military action from land, air and sea from 5 pm onwards,” Misri said.
