Toronto/CMEDIA: Canada’s Governor General’s office reportedly has confirmed on Friday that Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney will be officially sworn in and unveil his first cabinet on Tuesday at Rideau Hall.
Led by Governor General Mary Simon, the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT and will take place inside the historic ballroom, located just steps from Carney’s new residence at Rideau Cottage.
Carney has been prime minister since March 14, but was only elected on April 28 to the House of Commons. During his campaign he had promised quick action on a number of files that are expected to make this return to Parliament from the start including include removing federal barriers to interprovincial trade by Canada Day, rolling out a “Canada Strong Pass” that will provide youth 17 and under free access to national galleries and museums along with free seats on Via Rail when travelling with their parents.
Carney has also promised free access to national parks and historic sites this summer, along with reduced pricing for camping access.
Introducing Canadians to the team Carney has chosen to implement his campaign platform and take charge of critical national issues, this event will. be a strong advocate for gender parity.
Carney is expected to maintain a balanced cabinet, although it is not certain about whether he will expand the number of ministers beyond his pre-election lineup.
Speculation over potential appointments are looming among Political circles in Ottawa particularly regarding new Liberal MPs, high-profile recruits, and whether any former ministers from Justin Trudeau’s government will retain their posts or be moved aside.
Political circles are also interested in whether Carney will keep intact the inner circle that accompanied him during his initial diplomatic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
He has said he’s committed gender parity in his next cabinet and his first cabinet included 13 men, including himself, and 11 women.
Carney reaffirmed last week his vision for a lean and efficient front bench
“I committed to an efficient cabinet, a focused cabinet,” he told reporters in Ottawa.
After swearing in ceremony, cabinet ministers will have two weeks to hire staff, review their portfolios, and start shaping their legislative and policy agendas before Parliament reconvenes.
