TIFF announces World Premiere screening of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King

Toronto/CMEDIA: Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced last week that TriStar Pictures’ The Woman King will have its World Premiere at the 47th edition of the Festival. 

The remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors is portrayed by The Woman King who with skills and fierceness protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.

The action drama, The Woman King is inspired by true events and follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis), as she trains the next generation of recruits and prepares them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, produced by Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, and Maria Bello, executive produced by Peter McAleese, the film The Woman King was written by Maria Bello and Dana Stevens, and screen played by Dana Stevens.

Co-financed by Entertainment One (eOne), the film stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
