The United Nations will mark World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2022. This year, the theme is “Safer food, better health.” Safe food is essential to human health and well-being and is one of the most critical guarantors for good health. The day will draw attention and mobilize action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health.
The day will be marked with a virtual event from 14:00-15:00 CEST with video messages from WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Dr Qu Dongyu.
There will be an interactive session on the need to transform food systems to deliver better health, followed by WHO Assistant Director-General Naoko Yamamoto and Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the UN in Geneva Dominique Burgeon delving into this year’s theme for World Food Safety Day.
The second half of the event will explore, in a moderated panel with speakers from Chile, Ghana, India and Singapore, how different players ensure the sustainable production and consumption of safe foods in different settings in order to improve health outcomes.
World Food Safety Day is observed ten days after the adoption of the updated WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety, a milestone in the work to promote health, keep the world safe and protect the vulnerable. The strategy is put forward in consultation with FAO, Member States and the World Organization for Animal Health.
