IBNS-CMEDIA: The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands, dealing a blow to their World Cup campaign at the Wagener Stadion in Amstelveen on Friday.
India had produced a resilient performance in their final group-stage match, holding England to a 0-0 draw to progress to the second round. However, Friday’s clash against the defending champions left Indian fans disappointed.
The Netherlands, the reigning world champions, once again showcased their dominance and quality on the field.
India started the match on the back foot, with Yibbi Jansen converting a penalty corner in the second minute with a powerful drag flick to give the Netherlands an early 1-0 lead.
Jansen has been among the standout performers for the Dutch side throughout the tournament.
Despite sustained pressure and continuous attacks from the Netherlands, India defended resolutely and prevented the hosts from extending their lead in the first half.
India continued to hold firm at the back but conceded a second goal in the 38th minute, when Frederique Matla found the net to make it 2-0.
The Netherlands continued to press for more goals, but Indian goalkeeper Savita produced several fine saves to keep the scoreline from becoming more damaging.
The Dutch side ultimately secured all three points with a convincing victory.

India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals were further dented after China and Australia played out a 1-1 draw.
India will now need to beat Australia in their next match to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
