IBNS-CMEDIA: In one of the worst terror strikes that targeted non-Muslim tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s holidayers’ magnet Pahalgam, Pakistan-backed gunmen killed at least 28 people, including two foreigners, and injured many others, triggering a nationwide outrage and shaking the Modi government on the security situation in the region that was witnessing peace and a surge in return of vacationers. The attack is the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama strike and aimed at hitting the economy of a resurgent Kashmir as it sent a chilling message to the state of India since tourists were largely spared by the terrorists in the past.

United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s popular tourist destination Pahalgam that left 28 people killed.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, responding to inquiries, emphasised the Secretary-General’s condemnation of the attack.

Indian Army kills two terrorists along LoC a day after Pahalgam attack

The Indian Army has killed two terrorists during an encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a day after terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam city, leading to the death of 28 people.

“Heavy exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists, two terrorists have been eliminated, infiltration bid foiled by the security forces in the ongoing Operation. Large quantity of weapons, ammunition and other war-like stores have been recovered from the terrorists,” Chinar Corps wrote on X.

Benjamin Netanyahu condemns Pahalgam attack

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemed the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam city which left over 20 people killed.

Addressing his X post to Indian PM Narendra Modi, Netanyahu extended his support to India in the fight against terrorism.

“My dear friend @narendramodi, I am deeply saddened by the barbaric terrorist attack in #Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, that killed and injured dozens of innocents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims & their families. Israel stands with India in its fight against terrorism,” Netanyahu said.

 Pallavi, the tourist from Karnataka whose husband Manjunath was killed by the terrorists, said the killers wanted to send a message to Prime Minister Modi. 

She and her 18-year-old son faced the terrorists daring them to kill them as well. Instead, she was asked to carry the message of terrorists to Modi. 

 NDTV quoted Pallavi saying, “We are in Pahalgam, and my husband died right in front of me. I couldn’t cry or react — I couldn’t even comprehend what had just happened. I had come here with my husband Manjunath and our son Abhijeya from Karnataka’s Shivamogga.”

Resistance Front affiliated to Pakistan-based LeT claims responsibility

The Resistance Front, a shadow group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack, but the authorities are yet to confirm that officially. The attack took place in Baisaran, a scenic spot accessible only by foot or horseback.

PM Narendra Modi cut short his state visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to India early Wednesday morning. Image posted on X by MEA. 

Modi skipped the official dinner to arrive early Wednesday in view of the Pahalgam attack. Earlier he spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah, who has reached Srinagar to assess the situation. “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam… Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice,” PM Modi said in a statement.
