International students from Canada and around the world gained knowledge about social, academic, and economic challenges in Canada.
Toronto, Ontario. October 3, 2022 — The International student Summit, an initiative of International Youth Canada in Association with the Consulate General of India, in Toronto to help International students with useful information before, during, and after their arrival in Canada and to expose them to various community support programs was attended by thousands of students in person and online from around the world. Besides gaining knowledge from a bunch of academic leaders and the largest providers of education in Canada and other resourceful speakers on navigating through social, academic, and economic challenges in Canada, the summit helped the participants to directly network with the presenters and leaders of various community organizations and groups.
International Youth, a not-for-profit organization helps international students to network and build strong connections that will lead to a successful academic and post-academic life in Canada.
The Consul General of India, Ms. Apoorva Srivastava gave a motivating and inspirational inaugural speech saying that India and Canada are strategic partners in many areas and many provinces have offices in India to strengthen the academic and economic relationships between the countries. There are over 230,000 Indian students studying in Canada as International students at present and they have marked a significant presence in every Canadian college and university. She urged the students to get connected with the CGI and community organizations and to register at the CGI website to avail of the consulate services directed to benefit students.
Expert speakers and Academic heads from several Ontario colleges and universities shared their initiatives to support students in a panel session moderated by Prashant Srivastava. Mr. Angelo Raimondo from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) hosted a valuable session about the regulatory side of entry and settlement into Canada. Mr. Randall Arsenault of the Ontario Human Rights Commissioner gave information about safety and security for students. Information about community group resources was presented by representatives from Ontario Heroes, Sunoh, Ayework, ONrx, and PCHS.
The multi-panelist group included Mr. Keith Monrose – Executive Director, Seneca International, Seneca College; Sunand Sharma, Associate Dean, Community Citizenship, Leadership & Engagement, Sheridan College; Trish Weigel Green, Associate Vice President, Student Affairs, Conestoga College; Stephanie Barry, Director, International Education & Development, Georgian College; Andrew Ness, Dean, International Education, Humber College; Anuraj Bajwa, Dean, International & Partnerships, Mohawk College; Carolyn Yeo, Manager, International – Ontario Tech University; Emily Mancuso, Associate Registrar, Director, Student Recruitment & Admissions (Acting), University of Toronto; and Claire Kelly-Orozco, Sukhjeet Singh, Sobia Azam – International Recruitment & Support, Confederation College.
Ash Patel sequenced the speakers in a meaningful and engaging way and was very well received by the audience.
A preview of the International student Guide with useful information and resources compiled by IYC was also exhibited during the Summit.
International Youth Canada is a not-for-profit organization established to provide programs to support international learners before, during, and after their studies in Canada. The organization is volunteer-run and provides services to international students from 30+ countries. Service offerings include information sessions, programs, and platforms that promote social connectivity, a mentoring portal, a settlement portal, and liaison with external agencies.
The entire event was executed with the active support of a large number of volunteers drawn from the academic and social circles directly connected to International students and youth on work permits.
