IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reached out to the Indian cricket team members to cheer them up following the defeat against Australia in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final.
After India had to swallow a six-wicket defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Prime Minister entered the team’s dressing room to motivate them.
Modi, who along with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles handed over the trophy to the winning captain Pat Cummins, was heard in a video telling two senior most players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, “It happens. You have won 10 matches in the tournament!”
“You have worked really hard,” Modi was heard telling India head coach Rahul Dravid.
Hugging Mohammad Shami, who was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament, the Prime Minister says, “You have played very well this time.”
The Indian players including skipper Rohit Sharma turned emotional after they were beaten by Australia, who lifted the trophy for the sixth time in total.
Though India had a dream run in this edition of World Cup winning 10 out of 10 matches, the men in blue, who had last won an international trophy in 2013, scored only 240 in 50 overs in the final and the run was chased quite comfortably by the Aussies.
