Kolkata/IBNS-CMEDIA: Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami on Friday announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtains down on his illustrious 13-year career in the longest format of the game.
Shami announced his decision in an emotional post on his X handle, exactly 13 years after making his Test debut.
The Indian pacer played 64 Tests, claiming 229 wickets at an average of 27.71. He finishes as India’s sixth-most successful fast bowler in Test cricket, having delivered several notable performances in challenging conditions.
Shami to continue in white-ball cricket
Although Shami has called time on his Test career, he plans to continue playing white-ball cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic competitions.
In his retirement message, the 36-year-old thanked his teammates, coaches, family, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and fans for supporting him throughout his journey, including during injury setbacks and comebacks.
‘Test cricket has been more than just a format for me’
Sharing his decision on X, Shami wrote: “I’m leaving behind the white jersey, but never the memories tied to it… When I first wore India’s Test jersey, I had just one dream — to do something for my country. Since then, every wicket, every struggle, every injury and every comeback has taught me something.
“Test cricket has been more than just a format for me; it has been an incredibly special part of my life. Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am deciding to retire from Test cricket.”
He also expressed gratitude to those who stood by him throughout his career.
“My heartfelt thanks to every teammate, coach, family member and those millions of Indians who stood by me on this journey and kept their faith in me through both good times and difficult ones.
“My heartfelt thanks also to the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), who believed in my talent, gave me opportunities to grow and played an important role in my cricketing journey. Your support and trust will always be special to me.
“Even though my last Test ball on the field may have been bowled, the pride of playing for India will always live on in my heart.”
Signing off, Shami added: “Thank you, Test Cricket. Yours, Shami.”
