Ottawa/CMEDIA: Firearm-control legislation reportedly tabled today by the federal Liberals features a national freeze on importing, buying, or selling handguns.

The legislature also allows for the removal of gun licenses from people involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment, such as stalking

The government plans to increase criminal penalties, provide more tools to investigate firearms crimes and strengthen border measures to fight gun smuggling and trafficking.

Besides, a new “red flag” law would be created by the bill to allow courts to require that people considered a danger to themselves or others surrender their firearms to police.

These measures, the government says would guard the safety of those applying through the process, mostly women in danger of domestic abuse, by protecting their identities.

Permanent alteration of long-gun magazines would be required reportedly by the Liberals so they can never hold more than five rounds, and also ban the sale and transfer of large-capacity magazines under the Criminal Code.
