IBNS-CMEDIA: The US Embassy in Jerusalem has issued a travel advisory warning American citizens across the Middle East of escalating security risks and potential armed attacks targeting US interests.

“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance due to the increased threat of armed attacks by Iranian-supported Houthis and Iranian efforts to target US government officials in the region,” the advisory stated.

It also warned of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions.

The Embassy said Iranian-backed Houthis had previously engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and critical infrastructure that resulted in civilian casualties and significant travel disruptions.

“The hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly,” the advisory cautioned.

Americans travelling to or from the Middle East were urged to monitor airport and airline operations and develop contingency plans in advance.

The Embassy further warned that Iran and groups supporting it could target US interests overseas, including locations associated with American citizens and businesses, as well as other institutions linked to the United States worldwide.

Safety Measures Recommended by the Embassy

The Embassy outlined several precautionary measures for American citizens in the region:

Enrol in the US Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and facilitate contact with the Embassy during emergencies.

Identify the nearest shelter or protected space.

Download the Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command application on Android or Apple devices to receive real-time alerts about rockets, missile attacks and armed UAV intrusions. Other free applications, including “Red Alert: Israel,” are also available.

Identify a secure location inside the residence or another safe building.

Maintain supplies of food, water, medication and other essential items.

During an aerial attack, stay away from glass doors, windows and fallen debris, and monitor official communications for further instructions.

Keep mobile phones charged and save relevant emergency contact numbers.

Remain vigilant and aware of the surrounding environment.

Avoid demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with a heavy police presence.

Monitor local media and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Contact airlines directly for information about flight changes or cancellations.

Exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the United States and maintain a low profile.
