IBNS-CMEDIA: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said he had an important conversation with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, and that the two leaders had agreed to meet in New York.
In a post on X following the conversation, Zelenskyy said the talks covered several key issues and described the planned meeting as potentially significant.
“I just spoke with President Trump @POTUS. An important conversation, and we got through a lot. We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelenskyy wrote.
He also thanked Trump for sending his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Kyiv for peace talks.
However, Zelenskyy’s post did not specify when the meeting with Trump would take place in New York.
Referring to the visit by Trump’s envoys to Kyiv, Zelenskyy said: “I thanked the President for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s visit to Kyiv. We went through the key details thoroughly, and they saw the situation in Ukraine firsthand. The peace track is our number one priority.”
“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life. We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps,” he added.
Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill.
The bill, named after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and passed by Congress this month, provides for primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and countries supporting Moscow in its war against Ukraine.
The phone conversation between the two leaders came amid continuing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain ongoing.
