Toronto Mayor John Tory thanked today all four major provincial party leaders for committing to the priorities of the City of Toronto should they form the next Ontario government.
Included in Toronto’s priorities are getting more housing built, especially supportive and affordable housing, supporting a strong economic recovery, protecting community safety, continuing transit expansion, and investing in mental health.
Tory reportedly said that he is absolutely committed to working with whichever party is elected to lead Ontario to continue delivering on these shared priorities.
While working with the Government of Canada, all four leaders have pledged to provide the City with relief funds to cover its remaining $875 million in COVID-19 operating budget impacts, mainly for TTC revenue shortfalls and shelter costs.
“We have secured the ongoing support from the leaders of all four political parties…Now we need the Government of Canada to commit its continued emergency support for Toronto, together with the Province, to make sure we can make as much capital infrastructure investment and create as many jobs as possible this year,” Tory said in a news release.
Tory added that as soon as the Ontario election is over, he looks forward to working immediately with the province and the federal government to secure their continued support for Toronto’s COVID-19 operating budget shortfalls.
Toronto’s Mayor and his office, in the interim, continue to have discussions with federal officials, including Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, on the need to support Canada’s economic engine, Toronto.
