Winnipeg/CMEDIA: The installation of 20 new permanent digital message boards and 19 highway cameras across the province of Manitoba government makes it easier for drivers to stay safe and informed, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced today.
“These upgrades are about more than technology, they’re about safety,” said Naylor. “We’re giving Manitobans the real-time information they need to make smart travel decisions, especially when weather and road conditions change quickly.”
Placing along major routes including Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 1, 1E, 6, 75, 100 and 101, near Emerson, Portage la Prairie, Thompson, Winnipeg and other key locations, these new digital message boards will display live updates on traffic delays, road closures, detours and weather-related advisories. Each board is remotely controlled and updated instantly to keep drivers informed.
With the installation having begun in July, it is expected that the system will be fully operational by later this fall, the minister noted.
In addition to the message boards, the minister added that 19 new cameras will be installed along high-traffic corridors to facilitate the capture of road conditions every 15 minutes, with images uploaded to the Manitoba511 website and app.
“These tools are especially important in a province like ours, where weather can shift in minutes,” said Naylor. “Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to the lake or driving across the province, Manitoba511 is your go-to source for safe travel planning.”
As part of Manitoba’s broader commitment to modern, responsive infrastructure, the upgrades puts safety and accessibility first.
