Ottawa/CMEDIA: The laureates of the 2024 EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship have reportedly been announced by the Delegation of the European Union to Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ).
The 2024 winners are:
Catherine Morrison (Ottawa, Ontario) for her story ‘Canada follows European countries in establishing a right for workers to disconnect’. Catherine tackles in this piece, public service governance issues that are similar to both Canada and Europe, often overlooked by the media, and offers solutions, which are worth reading.
Michael John Lo (Victoria, British Columbia) for his piece ‘North Saanich De Havilland plant expands as orders ramp up for firefighting planes’.
Showing great journalistic rigor in keeping with the spirit of this fellowship, Michael has identified issues relevant to his province, Canada and Europe.
Patrick Butler (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador) for his report ‘Un sommet Canada-UE à Terre-Neuve sans aborder l’embargo européen sur le phoque’.
Demonstrating journalistic abilities, Patrick has linked a local issue to the global picture, addressing issues affecting both Newfoundland and the European Union.

Patrick Leblond, professor, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa,
Leslie MacKinnon, journalist
Hugo Rodrigues, CAJ representative and managing editor of the Cornwall Standard Freeholder, and
Gabriela Alexandru, Head of Political, Press and Information Section, Delegation of the European Union to Canada.
The three laureates will participate in a week-long study tour of European Union institutions in Brussels in October 2024.
Pleased to partner with the CAJ on this initiative, the Delegation of the European Union aims at giving young Canadian journalists and writers an opportunity to advance their career goals and to form life-long friendships with Europeans.
Delegation of the European Union to Canada pays all study tour expenses of the winners, who also benefit from a one-year CAJ membership or one-year membership renewal.
