IBNS: Nearly 40 years since it was released, Wham’s evergreen track ‘Last Christmas’ has been named the top song on the Official Charts Christmas list by BBC Radio 1.

The festive classic, which has been liked by fans for decades now, beat top contender Sam Ryder to reach the number one spot.

In the list, Mariah Carey stood third while Noah Kahn’s Stick Season ended fourth.

Interestingly, it is the first time that the iconic song by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley became the number one track on Christmas week.

“It’s marvellous and humbling to have got there,” Ridgeley told the BBC. “Top of the pile is a great place to be.”

He said Michael always wanted the song to be a number-one track during Christmas.

Released in 1984, and written and produced by George Michael, the song has been covered by many artists since its original release.

Wham Official also wrote on Instagram: “WHAM!’s #LastChristmas is FINALLY the UK’s Official Christmas Number 1 single! 🎄🚨 Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael’s festive favourite breaks UK Official Chart records as it claims the coveted #XmasNo1 trophy.”

George Michael died in 2016.
