Ottawa/CMEDIA: Responding to Ukraine’s urgent request, Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand announced on Jan 26 that as a result of extensive coordination with Allies and partners, Canada will supply four Leopard 2 main battle tanks from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)’ inventory, among other Western battle tanks to Ukraine, a news release has said.
“Today’s announcement is proof of our enduring commitment…with our Allies and partners, we will supply Leopard 2 tanks, sustainment, and training on their use in response to Ukraine’s urgent requests…stands firmly with Ukraine in defence of freedom and democracy,” said Anita in the news release.
In addition. Anita announced that Canada will provide ammunition,and spare parts, and will deploy Canadian Armed Forces members to train Ukrainian soldiers on the use of these tanks in a third country.
The call for donation was reiterated by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov at last week’s meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany.
An outstanding battle tank with excellent mobility, firepower, and survivability that serves the Canadian Army well, the Leopard 2 tanks are heavily armored and highly protected vehicles that provides soldiers with a tactical advantage on the battlefield during their fight heroically to defend their nation’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Committed with well over $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine as it fights Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war.
