Toronto/CMEDIA: The City of Toronto has reportedly launched an Air Conditioner Assistance program for Low-Income Seniors to beat extreme heat.
“Everyone needs a safe and comfortable place to call home. This year…three historic heat waves…dangerous…deadly…new pilot program to provide 500 free air conditioners to low-income seniors, who are the most vulnerable…collaboration with tenant advocates to ensure safe and affordable homes for renters in our city,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said.
The City has already delivered more than 380 portable air conditioner units since early July to low-income seniors across Toronto.
A $200,000 dollar initiative will soon result in 500 units being provided to those in need across the city by this air conditioner pilot program outlined in the City’s 2025 budget priorities.
Launched this Spring, the Air Conditioning Assistance Program is coordinating the delivery and in-suite installation at no cost to recipients.
For more information on the program is available on the City’s website: Air Conditioner Assistance Program – City of Toronto
The effects of climate change are being experienced by the city of Toronto through its frequent, extended heat events, creating policies and programs becomes important to address the excessive temperatures that put people in danger during the summer.
Complementing the City’s ongoing annual measures, this program serves to protect people from hot weather.
Access to more than 500 cool spaces across Toronto is being provided by the City’s Heat Relief Network including libraries, community centres and pools so people can seek relief from the heat in a location close to them.
The City has also activated the Metro Hall lobby area (Rotunda) as a 24/7 Cool Space for the duration of this Heat Warning
“This is a great pilot program and an example of the supports we must continue developing in response to the increase in extreme hot weather Toronto is expected to experience in the coming years,” Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth) said.
