Toronto/CMEDIA: In his effort to reportedly encourage Ontarians to buy Canadian this holiday season, Ontario Premier Doug Ford is showcasing some traditional Canadian Christmas treats.
In a video posted to X on Wednesday, Ford is seen sampling various desserts, most of which are uniquely Canadian, while someone off camera shares identifying hints as to what they could be.
He ends the video by saying he hopes everyone gets to enjoy some Canadian treats over the holidays.
“Don’t forget to support your local shops this holiday season,” Ford says.
In light of Ford’s steady presence during this year’s trade wars with the U.S., this video comes on the heels of a recent headline-making riff with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
As part of a “first round of retaliation” against U.S. President Donald Trump’s extensive tariffs on Canadian goods, Ford requested in early March that the LCBO remove more than 3,600 American-made alcohol products from its shelves.
Axing Elon Musk’s Starlink contract with the province and his proposed steps to break down interprovincial trade barriers, Ford also announced a sweeping ban on U.S.-based companies participating in government procurement.
During the World Series, Ford ran a multi-million-dollar anti-tariff ad in the U.S. in Oct featuring former U.S. president Ronald Reagan.
Encouraging Canadians to spend their money on local tourism, Ford said earlier this month that he wouldn’t be going to Florida this winter.
“Let me tell you, it’s gonna be the first time I’m not going to Florida,” Ford said at the time, adding that he “just can’t do it.”
The dig drew criticism from DeSantis. He responded on X by posting a news release from August, saying Florida broke a record for tourism in the second quarter of this year, welcoming 34.4 million visitors.
“Actually we continue to break tourism records (and win Stanley Cups),” the Florida governor quipped, adding a hockey dig, after the Florida Panthers eliminated the Toronto Maples Leafs on their way to a second straight Stanley Cup championship last season.
