Winnipeg/CMEDIA: Dedicated to engaging consumers and people in our agriculture and agri-food industries, Manitobans are encouraged to celebrate the province’s unique and diverse local and Canadian food, as well as its cuisine culture, by participating in Food Day Canada tomorrow, Manitoba’s Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson announced in a news release today.

“We appreciate our hard-working farmers and producers who make it possible for us to enjoy great food at home and when dining out…this long-standing national event…a goal to shine a light on Canadian cuisine…and pride in our province’s food industry,” said Johnson.

With a mission to actively promote the growth and study of our distinctively Canadian food culture, and Canada’s beef farmers and ranchers during BSE. Food Day Canada was created originally as the World’s Longest Barbecue, by Anita Stewart, her family, and a number of pioneering supporters.

“Since its inception in 2003, Food Day Canada has become one of the nation’s largest and longest-running celebrations of the people and products that make Canada’s food industry great”, a news release said.

In recognition of Food Day Canada, the dome of the Legislative Building will be illuminated in red and white lights once the sun sets from tomorrow evening until sunrise on July 31, along with other iconic locations across the country.

Manitobans are encouraged to share stories about how they are celebrating Canadian local food and farming by visiting www.FoodDayCanada.ca  to show support by taking a pledge.

Locations of chefs, restaurants, and events offering creative menus have been mapped by the website by highlighting locally grown and Canadian foods.

Food Day Canada is a free and inclusive grassroots movement meant for all who believe in the vision to engage and inspire everyone to shop, cook & dine Canadian and is observed by thousands of individuals and partners from coast to coast to coast each year.

A registered Canadian not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to raise awareness of Canada’s diverse ingredients, rich supply chain, and storied agri-food history,  through celebration, Food Day Canada invites partners and participants to creatively collaborate with a focus on finding novel ways to reduce food insecurity and food waste.
