Winkler/CMEDIA: Manitoba Health Minister Audrey Gordon announced here today that it is Increasing surgical capacity for hip and knee replacements and other orthopedic surgeries to provide more Manitobans a better quality of life and increased mobility and added that facilities like BoundaryTrails Health Centre implement same-day surgeries, a news release said.
“Offering more day surgeries for hips and knees…Recovering at home after same-day surgery gives patients the comforts of their own environment as they heal and access physiotherapy and rehabilitative treatments as part of our continuum of care,” said Dr. Hany Asham, orthopedic surgeon, Boundary Trails Health Centre.
One of several health-care facilities across the province that provide hip and knee replacement surgeries, Boundary Trails Health Centre completed 139 more than planned in 2022-23, by performing 639 hip and knee replacement surgeries owing to funding for increased arthroplasty surgery volumes.
With more than half of the joint replacement surgeries completed last year at the facility considered ‘same day,’ helps ensure hospital beds remain available to those who need them most and builds capacity for other parts of the facility, the minister noted.
The capital renovation project underway at Boundary Trails Health Centre with an investment of over $64 million in support of Manitoba’s Clinical and Preventive Services Plan aims to not only add acute care inpatient beds, but also provide a larger, modern space for patient programs
Overall surgical capacity including the number of hip and knee surgeries performed across the province also increased by projects funded through the Diagnostic and Surgical Recovery Task Force (DSRTF)
Established in December 2021, the DSRTF’s team of professionals are responsible for identifying and implementing short- and long-term solutions to improve surgical and diagnostic waitlists.
