Berlin: According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany’s record net immigration caused its population to spike to an all-time record number of at least 84.3 million inhabitants at the end of 2022.
With reportedly up to 1.45 million more people moving to Germany than left the country, the net immigration was more than four times higher than in the previous year and stood at the highest level since records began in 1950.
Germany’s rise in immigration in recent years is reportedly mainly due to war and violence in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, as well as the Russia-Ukraine war.
Constant immigration has also been observed from Romania, Bulgaria, and Poland.
