Gatineau apartment fire caused 200 to evacuate

CMEDIA: Following reportedly a fire break out Saturday evening in an apartment building, in the Aylmer sector of Gatineau, Que., that provides affordable rent for people aged 55 and over caused dozens of people to evacuate their homes.

A Sunday morning news release from Gatineau fire services reported that firefighters were called to 166 Rue Principale at around 9:20 p.m.

The work of firefighters was complicated when Crews reported smoke on several floors.

There had been no injury, officials confirmed but crews pulled around 200 people from the building, some of whom had moved onto their balconies. 

Firefighters added that about 30 people were taken into the care of the Red Cross.

By around 2:00 a.m, the fire was reported to be under control and officials noted property damage estimated at more than $3 million. 

Owned by Aylmer Arms, a non-profit organization the building has 104 units, according to the City of Gatineau’s property assessment report. 

According to its website, the building provides affordable housing to people aged 55 and over.
