CMEDIA: The fantasy musical film, starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric, fictional chocolatier, ‘Wonka’ has reportedly reached a notable milestone by clinching a box office benchmark by crossing $600 million globally.
Only seven films that were released in 2023 managing to surpass the $600 million mark, ‘Wonka’ has reached a notable milestone.
After 10 weeks on the big screen, “Wonka” has generated $210 million in North America and $395.1 million internationally with a worldwide $604.9 million.
Since its debut in December, the $125 million-budgeted film backed by Warner Bros remained in the top five on domestic box office charts including Chalamet’s star power, Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and the 2005 reboot starring Johnny Depp.
Director Paul King’s highest-grossing film “Wonka” surpasses 2014’s “Paddington” and its 2017 sequel as well as stands as Chalamet’s biggest movie at the international box office.
This family film, co-starring Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa, centers on the early days of Willy Wonka who dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate.
Only later he discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers.
“This achievement is a testament to the creative brilliance of Paul King, [producer] David Heyman, Timothée Chalamet and the dedicated cast and crew…brought the timeless magic of Roald Dahl’s iconic characters to life…turned it into an instant classic for a new generation…‘Wonka’ in such a remarkable way.” Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, co-chairs & CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, reported in a statement.
In the classic film, the Oompa-Loompa characters create songs dedicated to the mistakes of the naughty children in the original film.
