Ottawa/CMEDIA: Another $20 million in aid for people affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, and matching millions more in private donations are being reportedly sent by the federal government of Canada.
Responding to United Nations asking for more help when tens of thousands of buildings were damaged on Feb 6, leaving more than 47,000 people dead, the International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan announced that Canada will match $10 million in donations to members of the Humanitarian Coalition, on top of the $10 million in matching donations to the Canadian Red Cross.
After two major earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks shook the region, emergency food, water, sanitation and health services are being provided to the Humanitarian Coalition, which includes Oxfam, Plan International and World Vision as members.
The UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF reported saying that more than a million people are staying in temporary accommodations, including gyms, stadiums, hotels and dormitories, with limited access to essential services.
Preliminary work started less than three weeks after the magnitude 7.8 quake collapsing and severly damaging 173,000 buildings, containing around 534,000 apartments or other units, Turkish authorities has said.
