Ottawa/CMEDIA: Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly to ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a snap federal election this Sunday setting the stage for a vote as soon as April 28.

Carney is making the call based on public opinion polls that have placed the Liberal Party just out front in the coming contest.

Election day not yet confirmed, voters are expected to cast their ballots on either April 28 or May 5,

After Carney’s win in the Liberals following former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement in the federal leadership race just days prior, he was sworn in as Canada’s prime minister on March 14 .

The Parliament is set to return this coming Monday after having been prorogued for two months.

Carney will not have to present a throne speech by calling an election on Sunday, or face confidence votes that could bring the Liberal minority government down.

Carney also does not currently have a seat in the House of Commons.

A surge in many polls was seen by the Liberals since Trudeau’s resignation and U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The latest Nanos Research survey released Tuesday reveals that the Conservatives are leading by just one point with 35 percent of federal voting intention, while the Liberals sit at 34 percent.

Trump and his trade war was likely to be the ballot box issue with Trump and U.S. relations, is the top issue of national concern at 26.8 per cent, followed by jobs and the economy at 16.7 per cent, say same Nanos Research survey.

Reacting to the news of the long-anticipated and now-imminent election call both Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said they are ready to make their case to Canadians why they’re best placed to meet the moment.

Speaking in Jonquière, Que., on Thursday, Poilievre said,

“We will unleash hundreds of billions of dollars in power plants, nuclear energy, mines, pipelines, data centres… economy will boom, raising funds for hospitals and schools…less reliant on the Americans…and stand on our own two feet.“

“It’s time to bring home our jobs, energy and economic sovereignty,” said Poilievre who has been in campaign mode all week.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh accepted an electoral endorsement from the United Steelworkers (USW) union in Hamilton, Ont., on Thursday.

Singh said he was “humbled and honoured” to accept the endorsement and said,

“Mark Carney has been prime minister for a week now … but he has done nothing for workers who are losing their jobs in this country,” Singh said.

His government is ready for an election, the NDP leader said, accusing Poilievre and Carney of only being interested in helping billionaires and rich CEOs, while the New Democrats want to help workers and families.

Expected to make an announcement on affordable housing in Edmonton later today, Carney has yet to announce where he intends to run for his first-ever seat in the House of Common.

But According to speculation it could be in his former Alberta stomping grounds, a downtown Toronto constituency, or in a riding in the nation’s capital.

Coming months ahead of the fixed election date, some adjustments have been made to the federal election with Many of the rule changes not approved by Parliament before it was prorogued .

Following a recent federal electoral district redistribution, one major change in this campaign is that there are now 343 seats up for grabs, up from the current 338 ridings
