Vancouver/CMEDIA: A travel advisory has reportedly been issued by the British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit for areas in the Fraser Valley where there is a risk of flooding as well as Major highways between the Lower Mainland and the Interior due to flooding, falling rock and debris, and high avalanche hazards.
Until the heavy rainfall passes and water levels subside, people are asked to avoid travel unless necessary.
With the possibility of rapidly changing conditions, all travellers were made aware of the limited visibility due to high-intensity rainfall, pooling water, localized flooding and the potential for rising river levels can possibly contribute to flooding in areas of the Fraser Valley, which could further impact road conditions.
Ministry staff and maintenance contractors continue to monitor water levels and advise drivers that Highway 1 and other provincial roadways could be closed with little or no notice.
Patrols and traffic-control workers are being put on standby by the Contractors to close highways quickly, if needed.
Only local traffic is being allowed by Highway 11 at the Sumas border crossing which is closed to commercial traffic.
With rocks on the road Highway 7 is closed west of Hope (between Highway 9 and Ross Road) with no timeline for reopening.
A slope assessment will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11. After the assessment is complete, the ministry will provide an estimated time of reopening.
