Calgary: Jason Kenney, Alberta Premier announced Wednesday his resignation as United Conservative Party (UCP leader despite receiving 51.4 percent approval of his leadership from UCP members. Kenney had previously suggested he would accept a result of 50 percent plus one. Kenney reportedly advised party president Cynthia Moore of his intention of stepping down and asked that the party schedule a leadership election as soon as possible. Until an interim leader is chosen, Kenney will remain party leader, but it is unclear if he would continue as the MLA for Calgary-Lougheed. Danielle Smith, another former Wildrose leader, who has also expressed interest in the job issued a statement Wednesday evening thanking Kenney for uniting the right in Alberta and for his commitment to public service.
