IBNS-CMEDIA: Multiple explosions were heard on Iran’s southern Qeshm Island and in Bandar Lengeh on Monday amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, local media reports said.
There was no immediate official confirmation regarding the cause of the explosions or reports of casualties.
Tehran-based Fars News Agency reported that the “sound of explosions” was heard on Iran’s southern Qeshm Island on Monday night, citing Mehr News Agency.
Mehr also reported that explosions were heard in the waters off Bandar Lengeh in southern Iran.
The explosions came after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force claimed to have downed two US MQM-170 reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm Island using electronic warfare systems, Mehr reported.
The IRGC said Iran now possesses four drones of the same model and also claimed to have intercepted a US MQ-9 drone, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, US media outlets also reported the explosions.
The US military carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday, three US officials told CNN.
One official told the news channel that the US strikes came in response to Iran firing at a US aircraft.
The reported explosions came as US President Donald Trump said Iran was seeking an agreement with Washington.
“Oil Prices are DROPPING LIKE A ROCK, down almost $10 a Barrel, A RECORD, because people feel that there will not be a War with Iran. Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Why is Qeshm Island crucial?
Qeshm Island is strategically located near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, a key centre from which Tehran exercises influence over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes.
