Mumbai/IBNS-CMEDIA: Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, has been directed to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai last week, media reports said.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Mumbai issued the notice following a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned the actor’s participation in a political protest despite holding a US passport and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
FRRO issues notice to Imran Khan
A Mumbai Police official told Hindustan Times, “The FRRO has taken the action and a notice was served to the actor Imran Khan, who is [in India] on an OCI card. The actor, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, stays in Khar and was served the notice.”
Somaiya had approached the Mumbai Police seeking verification of Imran’s citizenship status.
He also questioned whether a foreign national holding an OCI card could participate in a political programme in India.
Actor detained during Mumbai protest
Imran was detained on October 10 at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where a protest was held against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
His girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayn Marie Khan were also detained.
The Delhi Belly actor later said he had attended the protest to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted.
He was released later that evening, although reports described further exchanges with the police following his initial detention.
CJP takes jibe
Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convener Abhijeet Dipke took a jibe at the order linking American singer Mary Millben’s remarks where she called the ‘pressure group’ funded by the donors in the United States.
Dipke posted on X, “Mary Millben, an American, can speak in favour of the BJP. But Imran, an OCI cardholder, can’t say anything against the BJP.”
