IBNS-CMEDIA: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has enabled residents to add or update their email ID in Aadhaar directly through the Aadhaar App, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.
The free service, available exclusively through the Aadhaar App, came into effect on July 1, 2026, and will remain available for six months, making it easier for residents to keep their Aadhaar details up to date.
“By removing the requirement for physical visits, the initiative underlines UIDAI’s commitment to providing people-friendly digital services as part of the Digital India initiative towards a Viksit Bharat,” the government said in a statement on Friday.
The response has been swift, with more than 2.5 lakh residents updating their email addresses within the first two days of the service becoming available.
Linking an email ID with Aadhaar enables users to receive real-time email alerts whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is made. This enhances transparency and adds an extra layer of security by keeping Aadhaar holders informed about the use of their identity credentials.
The upgraded Aadhaar App is designed to improve ease of living by allowing residents to access multiple Aadhaar-related services directly from their smartphones, including mobile number and address updates.
According to the government, more than 40 lakh residents have updated their mobile numbers through the new Aadhaar App so far, while nearly 10 lakh people have used it to update their addresses.
UIDAI has encouraged residents to take advantage of the new facility by downloading or updating the Aadhaar App.
The Aadhaar App is available on both Android and Apple’s iOS platforms.
