London/IBNS-CMEDIA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met his counterpart Keir Starmer in London on Monday during his bilateral visit to the United Kingdom.
The two leaders discussed escalating tensions in the Middle East, reaffirmed support for Ukraine and pledged to deepen defence and economic cooperation between their countries.
The meeting followed their participation in last week’s G7 leaders’ virtual meeting, where the situation in the Middle East was a key focus.
Both leaders condemned Iran’s missile and drone strikes, including attacks targeting civilian and energy infrastructure, and warned about the potential for further regional escalation and its economic consequences.
According to a statement released by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, Carney and Starmer expressed deep concern over the humanitarian toll of the conflict and the broader global economic implications, including rising energy prices.
Strengthening Canada-UK partnership
During their talks, Carney and Starmer highlighted the strength of the Canada-UK partnership and ongoing efforts to deepen economic and security ties.
The leaders discussed new approaches to mobilising large-scale financing to strengthen defence production and supply chains, including a proposed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank, an initiative aimed at supporting defence capabilities and strategic industries among allied nations.
Officials said such initiatives could help allied countries scale up defence manufacturing and improve supply-chain resilience amid growing geopolitical tensions.
Leaders comment on cooperation
Following the meeting, Starmer emphasised the importance of coordinated diplomacy with allies.
“Working together with our allies, we are continuing our diplomatic response to the situation in the Middle East. This matters for Britain’s security and the cost of living,” Starmer wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
Carney also highlighted the expanding partnership between the two countries.
“Canada and the UK are working more closely together in defence and deepening our economic relationship to create more certainty, security and prosperity,” Carney said in a message shared on X.
Support for Ukraine
The two leaders also reaffirmed their determination to maintain pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and reiterated their countries’ continued support for Kyiv.
As reported by the Canadian government following the meeting, the prime ministers underscored Canada’s and the United Kingdom’s “steadfast support for Ukraine” and their commitment to ensuring that Russia ends what they described as its war of aggression.
